Ready for Plaster on Interior Walls

As I write, Shawn Murphy the plaster man is here getting set up for the next stage. The blue board is about 90% done so Shawn and his team will be applying the plaster on the ceilings and walls throughout the evenings for the next few days. Here's what it is looking like inside BEFORE the plaster gets started...

New Window Boxes!!

I'm very excited about my new window boxes that went up today! We bought the boxes and brackets at the Mill Store in New Bedford and primed and painted them to match our trim color.

Jane Howland of Howland's Greenhouse on Alden Road in Fairhaven selected just the right plants for the sunnier side and the shadier side:
Sunny side: vinca, salmon geraniums, lime green sweet potato vine, lavender lace cuphea
Shady side: wire vine, pink dragon wing begonias, kosmo celosia

After the holes were drilled in the bottom, we lined them with polyfil batting for lightweight drainage and filled them with plants. We can keep them watered right through the window since they are pretty high up!

Garden Views

While the house is filled with workers, Matt & I have been working on the garden. We have some great new views of the yard with our new windows, so I'm excited to eventually be able to look out over the garden. We did some work on the front, too. --KAD

Moving Right Along...

Lots of progress this week so far on the Corgi House! The first plumbing and electrical stages are done and inspected, the insulation is in, the blue board is going up in the old living room/kitchen area ceilings.  The flooring was delivered and our new light fixtures for the island and cabinet hardware have arrived, too. Here are the latest photos! -KAD

New Dog Gate

This special dog gate was custom built by our construction supervisor/carpenter Donny Jordan.  The wood came from part of the original ceiling.  He salvaged it, planed it down, and built this beautiful gate.  The gate will allow us to contain the dogs while they can still see and get a nice breeze.

Farley and Monroe check out their new gate.  They are already trying to figure out how they will open it when we're not around

Let There Be Light!

At the end of last week, our electrician Keith McKay began the wiring and boxes needed throughout our new addition and updates on the electrical work in the existing parts of the living room and kitchen. Keith's a funny guy and a big Bruins fan too.  He is ably assisted by Aurilio. We will have actual light switches in many places. Dimmers, even! New pendant lights for over the island and sink are on the way from LightingDirect which has every kind of light fixture you can imagine. Today the recessed light fixtures went up, including the new lights for my studio space so now I have really good light to draw by.  The inspection for this part of the electrical work could be Friday if all goes well. -KAD

Recessed lights in the lower ceiling area (old living room space)
A new circuit breaker box located on what will be a short wall next to the fridge
Recessed lights and wiring in the cathedral ceiling area
A bonus- new recessed lights for the art studio/piano room

Flooring

With cost and durability in mind, we had pretty much settled on getting laminate flooring.  However, while at Lowe's on Saturday, (to pick up some trim paint) we ended up choosing a hardwood flooring product in a good shade at a great price.  It is the Noble House brand (a name only, we later found out it is made in China) and it is pre-finished in a gunstock oak shade.  At $3.29 per square foot, we couldn't leave it.  We have had a sample of the product in our flooring shoebox for about four months so it wasn't a surprise.  This should give you a rough idea of the look. -mjr

Half-way there?

The outside is all done except for some trim paint which will begin next week. We passed our framing inspection on June 1st with only a few fire blocks left to complete in the walls. Now we await the electrician who will begin rough electrical work on Monday next week. All the ceilings have now been framed. The kitchen cabinets are currently being built and will be installed sometime in July. -mjr
